Instagram Users Lose DM Privacy: Meta Confirms May 2026 Encryption Cutoff

Published:

Instagram’s private messaging feature is about to become significantly less private. Meta has confirmed that end-to-end encryption for DMs will be switched off beginning May 8, 2026. The announcement, made through a quiet help page update, has raised concerns among privacy-conscious users worldwide.

The backstory begins in 2019, when Zuckerberg pledged to bring end-to-end encryption to all of Meta’s platforms. Instagram’s implementation came in 2023 in the form of an opt-in feature. Unfortunately for privacy advocates, the feature never achieved widespread adoption.

When encryption is removed, Meta will be technically capable of reading every private message sent on Instagram. The company previously could only access messages from users who had not opted into encryption. The upcoming change eliminates this distinction entirely.

Global law enforcement agencies had long lobbied against the feature, citing its role in shielding criminal behavior. The FBI, Interpol, and various national agencies argued that Instagram’s encryption protected people who shared child sexual abuse material. Australia was reportedly among the first countries to see the feature disabled ahead of the global May deadline.

Digital rights advocates say the change sets a dangerous precedent. Rather than developing solutions that balance safety and privacy, Meta appears to be opting for the path of least resistance. Critics also warn that the commercial benefits of accessing message data make this a financially motivated decision dressed up as a safety one.
