Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind amid significant leadership changes within the AI research unit. Having co-founded DeepMind in 2010, Hassabis will transition to the position of chair and also assume a new role as chief scientist at Alphabet, the parent company of Google. This shift will allow him to step away from everyday management duties to concentrate on long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently the chief technology officer at DeepMind, will take over the leadership of the organization, assuming the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis has expressed that this change will provide him with the opportunity to focus more on the advancement of sophisticated AI technologies and ensure that these advancements are beneficial to humanity. He will also maintain his role as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery firm that originated from DeepMind.
This restructuring occurs alongside the exit of several prominent senior AI engineers from Google. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat are departing to establish a new venture named Discovery Loop, which will specialize in machine learning as well as science and engineering research.
The leadership shake-up comes at a time when competition within the AI sector is becoming increasingly fierce. Google is facing substantial challenges from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have achieved notable progress in AI modeling and coding technologies.
