Dubai is set to revolutionize airport transit with the development of an extensive 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network at Al Maktoum International Airport. This state-of-the-art underground driverless rail system will feature nine stations across the sprawling airport complex and is slated for completion by December 2031, with the first phase of the airport opening the following year, in 2032. Future expansions will see the network grow to 14 stations as the airport continues to develop.
Once completed, this project will be the largest automated people mover network worldwide, surpassing existing systems at major airports such as Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. Al Maktoum International is being designed to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually, with the first phase alone significantly boosting the airport’s capacity to handle 130 million passengers each year. Key components of this initial phase include the West Terminal and Concourse 1, alongside the new people mover system.
Beyond its internal transport innovations, the airport will also be integrated into Dubai’s broader rail infrastructure. Plans are in place for an Airport Express Link that will connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Additionally, there will be future connections to the Etihad Rail network and the Dubai Metro, further enhancing accessibility for travelers.
