Iran has declared that its framework agreement with the United States is now void, citing Washington’s alleged non-compliance, as reported by Iranian officials. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi announced the suspension of the agreement, emphasizing Iran’s need to prioritize its defense amid renewed tensions in the region.
The framework agreement, originally established in mid-June, aimed to set the stage for a long-term resolution to hostilities between the two nations. Part of the agreement included a commitment to negotiate a final deal within 60 days, as well as provisions concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, the Iranian government claims that the U.S. has not adhered to its obligations under the Islamabad declaration of intent, leading to the agreement’s suspension.
A ceasefire had been in place since early April, but tensions flared up again in early July, reigniting conflict and complicating diplomatic efforts. The situation has deteriorated to the point where Iranian officials assert they are no longer bound by the agreement’s terms.
This development marks a significant setback in attempts to de-escalate the situation, with Iran now focusing on its strategic priorities in the face of what it perceives as U.S. violations. As the regional situation remains volatile, the outlook for renewed diplomatic progress appears uncertain.
