UAE and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Military Efforts Against Houthis in Yemen

Published:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia are renewing their cooperation in Yemen by enhancing support for forces opposing the Houthi rebels. The UAE has agreed to resume financial assistance to Yemeni government forces, while Saudi Arabia commits to providing air support to the anti-Houthi coalition. This development arises amid rising concerns about Houthi military advances and increased attacks in the region.

The renewed partnership marks a potential improvement in relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have previously faced disagreements over Yemen’s political trajectory and the influence of southern separatist forces. The UAE had ceased its involvement in Yemen earlier this year after training and funding several southern military units, including the Giant Brigades.

Saudi Arabia has been the target of repeated drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis, striking its airports and energy infrastructure. In response, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has initiated a counteroffensive to reclaim territories such as the area near Marib and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, though progress has been limited.

Tensions have also escalated in Aden, following a Houthi missile strike near the city’s airport, which occurred as a passenger aircraft prepared for take-off. This attack came shortly after another strike on a presidential palace that resulted in at least five deaths and 16 injuries.

The conflict exacerbates regional security concerns, prompting Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to indicate possible defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia. Additionally, the United Kingdom is considering requests for increased military assistance.

Amid these developments, the humanitarian crisis in Yemen remains dire. The United Nations reports that over 200,000 people have been displaced since August, intensifying the burden on humanitarian organizations operating in the region.
